Bracknell Forest was formed on 1 April 1974, as the non-metropolitan district of Bracknell. The district took on the territory of the former East Hampstead Rural District (in which the Bracknell New Town had been developed). It changed its name in May 1988, at the same time as it was granted borough status. There are 265 Listed Buildings in Bracknell Forest of which 254 are Grade II, 10 are Grade II and 1 is Grade I which is Point Royal, a tower block built in the early 1960s by Philip Dowson and Derek Sugden of Arup Associates the company responsible for the design of the Sydney Opera House.

The built and developed proportion of Bracknell Forest amounts to about 35% of the total land area. Extensive forests cover more than 20% of the total area, consisting principally of parts of Windsor Forest; predominantly conifer plantation owned and managed by the Crown Estate and Forestry Commission. Sadly, rattan does not grow in Bracknell Forest! In forests where rattan grows, its economic value can help protect forest land, by providing an alternative to loggers who forgo timber logging and harvest rattan canes instead. Generally, raw rattan is processed into several products to be used as materials in Rattan Furniture. The various species of rattan range from several millimetres up to 5-7 cm in diameter. From a strand of rattan, the skin is usually peeled off, to be used as rattan weaving material. The remaining "core" of the rattan can be used for various purposes in furniture making.
