How to Repair Rattan Garden Furniture
RRattan Garden Furniture is typically low maintenance and extremely sturdy garden furniture, but should your rattan happen to split, crack or break there is no need to panic. Rattan is an incredibly flexible plastic that shapes easily but is therefore at risk of breaking. Additionally, there are always external circumstances like your dog taking a chunk of it, little fingers getting their hands on it and snapping sections, and extreme weather damage, that can cause your furniture to break.
Should you find one of these issues arise there is a quick and easy way to fix your rattan. We will walk you through the steps so that you can achieve rattan that is as good as new.
Things you will need:
Scissors / Blade
Replacement Rattan Strands
“Super” Glue (2-part Epoxy Resin Glue Recommended)
A little bit of patience
Step One: Cut out the broken strand(s) of rattan from your furniture and dispose of them.
Step Two: Mix the 2-part epoxy resin glue.
Step Three: Make sure that the replacement strand of rattan is longer than the strand you have cut out.
Step Four: Take the new replacement strand of rattan, that matches the colour of the line you are replacing, and weave it in and out of the gap left by the strand you have cut out. Follow the pattern of the existing weave. This can be quite fiddly business so here’s where your patience comes in handy!
Step Five: Apply glue to one end of the replacement rattan and tuck this under the vertical supporting strand of rattan. Hold the glued end of the replacement strand against the supporting vertical strand and allow the glue to dry. By tucking the end of the replacement strand behind the vertical supporting strand this will keep the weave neat and tidy; making the repair unnoticeable.
Step Six: Repeat the above step for the other loose end of the replacement strand of rattan so that both ends are masked by supporting vertical strands.
Step Seven: Allow the glue a further 30 minutes to dry before use.
